My mom is far healthier now than her mother was at her age. My grandma is also still alive at 93, so I can see my mom living at least to that age...….if she does, she will have been on Social Security for about 40+ years including the 8 years that I was on survivor SSI when my dad died before I was 18.

These systems are not sustainable. I work in finance and see high net worth people manipulating their income in ways to maximize every benefit that is available to them, not necessarily for SSI, but for other things. Saw a case the other day where a guy was taking loans from a large cash balance life insurance policy so he could continue to receive a reduced property tax for "low-income" people. Multiply this x everyone and you see the problem with hand outs and gimmes.

I can't remember the number, but if they had acted by hiking corporate taxes, capital gains or upper income brackets some years ago by somewhere between 1-2% it would have covered the program till 2100. The longer they waited the higher the number got.
