He went to save the saints of old. It's called the harrowing of hell. Abrahan, David, Isaiah, etc. still needed the saving blood and grace of Christ. Jesus went down to Abraham's Bosom, a section of hell partitioned off as a waiting place (free of torment) for God's faithful who had died.

No problem joining the church as an atheist IMO. I imagine in history most IQ110+ people would have done the same. Religion brings a lot of good things, social cohesion is one of them.

Eventually you will want to deny yourself. You will realize that Every time you deny your Self that God is increased within you. God is all goodness, so the sacrifice of food and girls and smokes is nothing.

But it is a long journey, you don't start at the beginning. You take it one step at a time. God doesn't want you to be perfect get, just humble enough to let Him do His work within you. He will do it all. You just have to let Him do it (by praying every day, going to Church, reading the Bible and the Saints, fasting, self-denial, mortification, penance, etc.) Just start small and work up. You're like a baby. You have to learn how to walk before you can run.

The only way I can descrive it is that every thing about your life will make sense, you will feel totally at peace no matter what happens, and joy will fill your every moment. And that is just the beginning.

Hey OP, I know how you feel about giving up booze and women. I too find difficulty giving up my women, booze and weed but the difference now is how I know these are harmful when examining them in a long term perspective. That is all you need at that point, the rest becomes a battle for your soul as you try to face off against your negative inner thoughts that tempt you. In the Christian mythos it is said these negative thoughts are demons, exogenous in nature, they are not guiding you to be who you truly want to be. Pray everyday and every moment you have the chance and desire to be Christian and you will slowly follow the steps and succeed.

It really helped give me purpose in my life now knowing that I do what I do for God as opposed to myself, if you are serious about Christianity then this will be the same for you. If you decide to go to church, don't get too caught up with what your priest says. If anything, you can always try a new church.

The one thing that you should know for sure is that Jesus the son of a true, loving, Benevolent god, and that Jesus died to save mankind from their sins

One thing I have to warn you about user, since both zealous Christians and stern atheists corrupt the word a lot, don't fall into the trap of mixing fantasy with reality. Since you come from an agnostic background, it is quite common for something like this to be the case. Christianity, when adhered to through the bible and philosophies of saints, will amplify your capabilities in both arts and sciences. This happens under one condition; you will have to be more sceptical and not associate anomalies with the supernatural but rather observe them and come to know why it is it came about. OT and NT were brought about by intuition as opposed to instinct. Intuition is when someone knows things are the way they are through experience whereas instinct comes from instantly knowing something is the way it is. The ladder fails when trying to interpret reality and is usually the basis for all revelations found in the Eastern Religions (The Indo Pantheon, Hinduism and all of its pagan byproducts). Intuition is what the prophets based their revelations on which is why there predictions come true. They're kind of like social scientists in a way, in that they forecast with the knowledge they possess.

So in other words, don't buy into the fiction and keep it real.

Most Christian sects I would say don’t believe that it is that literal. A day is a very unspecified and flexible amount of time when the Bible was written, so those 7 days could have in reality been billions of years. That’s the position of the Catholic Church atleast

Anyone who spends time to make an image of themselves are never right in the head. Actors and Models are by far some of the most unaccomplished and conceited people I have ever met.
