I went to Michigan, it was very much a "work hard, play hard" mentality. Because the drinking age is high in the US (21) a lot of people can't go to bars/clubs/pubs, so they join fraternities (Greek Life, they call it) where there are massive parties going on at night, and sometimes during the day before sporting events. People do crazy things and since there's not really any security or rules people go a bit wild.

Really depends on the university and city. My undergrad was very rowdy. Very drunk. Had shit tons of frats. Playboy would do tours and events at bars around campus frequently. Shit we even had bars designated 18-20 years old only where you could drink (only shitty beer though). It was football-centric, so in the fall the city basically allowed anyone to drink outside with open containers every Saturday. Comfy as fuck. I miss that shit. Was invited to a frat party that had literal midget tossing (chucking midgets into a mound of mattresses, it was awesome they had heets and tiny harnesses and shit). Grad school was nerdy and dorky, kinda sad and quiet, but it was in the middle of a big city so I guess that's why.
