Crimea whose majority is Russian voted in a referendum to be independant from the Ukraine. Ukraine said fuck off and sent the army, Russia used the opportunity to seize Crimea and other parts of the East of the Ukraine with sizable Russian population.

Fallowing the collapse of the USSR, Ukraine became an unofficial puppet state of Russia, they had independence, but every election was won by Russian backed, and pro Russian candidates. In 2013 the EU and Ukraine tried to arrange an allegiance that would allow legal framework to be in place in order to begin making steps to join the EU, which is the enemy of Russia. This was called Euromadian.

When Putin got word of this he called up the Ukrainian government and and had them cancel the Euromadian, which contradicted the Ukrainian people overwhelming support to ally with the EU. Fallowing this Protest broke out in Kiev, which then became illegal and thousands where censored, oppressed, and beaten. The protest turned into riots, than after the Ukrainian military (with Israeli mercenaries) opened fire on a crowd and dozens died. This sparked a revolution in Kiev in 2014.
Russia knew what was going on and quickly invaded the Crimean peninsula in order to secure their military assets at Sevastopol. The annexed the entire peninsula (the size of Ireland) and sparked a proxy war on the eastern border. Russia claims to be protecting ethnic Russians in Crimea and that Crimea was just a gift to Ukraine, and the 2 countries are now unofficially at war with each other.
This is the first land annexation in Europe since world war 2 and the EU and USA cant get involved because it will bring NATO into the conflict sparking WW3, and now Ukraine is getting ready to invade.

You gloss over a couple of facts.
For example the whole Euromaidan was funded by western NGOs that chose the most trash of society and made sure they had enough food and alcohol to last the whole thing.
Crimea fucked off from Ukraine willingly after they've seen what the fuck is going on in Kiev. Janukowich more or less had all the spheres of influences divided between oligarchs and people on his payroll, but new guys wanted to make redistribution. Russia didn't care about this and proposed stability and no shooting in the streets. So Crimea decided to go to Russia.
Though to be fare there is no way we were going to leave the naval base. But if not for referendum things would have been much more ugly. As it was the case in the east Ukraine where Russia didn't have troops stationed.
New self-proclaimed republics didn't want to go under Kiev hand because Poroshenko and his pack were going to strip them bare. They tried to hash out some agreements but failed and new Kiev government bombed them as much as they could to destroy the infrastructure and if not make them surrender than at least make it impossible for anyone to get any profit there.
