There's vinegar based slaw which wouldn't really work with BBQ or mayo based which definitely works. People sometimes add too much sugar to theirs though.

I always add slightly less sugar. I made the mayo by immersion blending an egg yolk, distilled white vinegar, mustard powder, some celery seed, salt, pepper, and a dash of paprika while slowly adding about a cup of oil (half vegetable, half canola). I let that set up and mixed it with white wine vinegar, sugar, celery seed, and some salt & pepper. I mixed it until the sugar dissolved and tossed in the shredded cabbage & carrots.
