There is nothing I have found - anti-depressants, socializing, exercise, booze and other drugs, crying, retreating, whatever - nothing makes me feel better about living than overcoming the admittedly sometimes overwhelming inertia and getting something meaningful done - doing laundry or going out to some nice setting and take some pictures, whatever. Not necessarily anything grand or important, just meaningful.

Depression is a long-term condition with your brain not working properly due to emotional/physical trauma/abuse/whatever. Not a I'm sad because my dog just died thing. Since technology is a primary determinant of power, they've essentially been replaced by technologically superior cultures. Those ancient values and customs that don't help with technological growth are discarded in favor of the cultures and customs that best promote it, so that by a process of natural selection, we have modern industrial culture dominant around the globe since it is the culture best suited for technological growth (to give you an example: some form of dueling, or ritualized violence for the sake of honor, was commonplace in virtually all pre-modern cultures, but it quickly ended with the industrial revolution because inter-personal violence creates disruptions in the smooth orderly functioning of the industrial system)

Even if you regarded the ability to learn from different cultures (ancient or present) as being enhanced by technological progress, This benefit is still FAR outweighed by all of the negatives of technological progress.
