I was taken to be assesed for autism when I was younger because I suddenly became socially awkward and reserved (I hadn't been in the past and was formely one of the most popular people in my school). I think it was just early puberty hormones or whatever and I wasn't diagnosed in the end (they said I may have a light form of Aspergers, but never formally diagnosed me). In the past this was just a way people behaved, not a mental problem. It's ironic how society obsesses over flouting norms, but gives the label of "autistic" to those who actually do so. Having that label hanging over you probably does more harm to the majority people diagnosed with Aspergers/high-functioning autism than the illness itself does.

I think that the overall area of what is considered a mental disability has expanded outward as well as more actual cases. Like 60% of the US qualifies as mentally ill. Probably like 5% is, and 2% was back 20 years ago.
People pretend that being weird = having autism these days. Tomboys are considered to have autism. Anime fans have autism. Wrestling fans have autism. People who aren't interested in sex have autism. Gonna need a source on that or some evidence to back that statement. I feel the main problem is the tendancy of Psychiatrists now to dish out mental diagonses like there’s no tomorrow. Mild attention problem? ADHD. Obssessive with one particular thing? Autism. Get moderately nervous over most things you do? Anxiety. I feel it’s because the only way they know how to treat people is if they are diagnosed and can then pick a treatment best suited for whatever they diagnosed. There’s very little generalised methods of helping people with mild issues.

If you notice signs that your child isn’t developing properly, IE deficient social skills, extreme sensitivity to change, overreaction as a result of feeling uncomfortable (all signs of autism) you’re gonna take your kid to a doctor to see if there is something up with them. If you’re a parent you’re gonna know the difference between your kid being quirky and suspecting them of having genuine dificulties, like I said.
