Poachers are disgusting, but one thing everyone gets wrong is this. Elephants are not endangered, at least not in the sense of being threatened with total extinction. Thousands of elephants are legally killed every year, either by licensed hunters or by government control officers who shoot them to keep the population down. In some parts of Africa, they're practically a nuisance animal and their population has to be culled every year. That being said, any scumbag who kills one without proper licensing and fair hunting tactics should be strung up by his balls and left to die.

Indeed. Same thing with lions. A lion can generate huge fees from licensing and outfitting. Lions that get old and slow tend to start looking for easy pickings, i.e. people or penned animals. I wouldn't kill people for free, would look over captured poachers, train them to stalk the elephants, ascertain their needs and how to move them to solutions without coming into contact.
Gather ivory to fund shipping of the carcass to Antarctica, where in time it can be revived, and it's tusks matched. No ivory products, just using the tusks as something that increases in value to back money. A sign of how many animals have been saved and thus how ordered the base of the country is.
