In NWI? Munster, Highland, Dyer, Saint John, Griffith, Hobart; Portage, Crown Point (closest to furthest from commuter train). All are vast majority white, Have decent to great school systems, and a low cost of living. $40K a year or over puts you firmly in the middle class.

Dyer or Saint John are you best bet. Munster is closer and has as good or better schools (probably the best in the state) but it borders Hammond and Lansing, and has a lot of spillover crime in the way of retail robberies. Crown Point is about 1.5 hours away but is the most idyllic Midwestern town in the area. White people in the area are moving there in droves. There's also Cedar Lake, which is also 1.5 hours away, but is growing fast because it's "upstart" and still cheap.

You are already paying IL income tax so may go all in. But basic rule, if you are south burbs,just go IN. Avoid the shitty sprawl from Joliet to the city. Itasca and local area are ok. Naperville is cancer. Palatine/Hoffman/Schaumburg are ok depending on area. Choose house based on better highschool. Dyer is nice.

All the places I listed were in Northwest Indiana. If you're a single guy and a CPD officer you can live almost anywhere in the city if you mind your money. The far SW and far NW parts of the city are "cop town" but the coolest neighborhoods to live in would be either the yuppie/hipster towns like Lakeview, Lincoln Park, Logan Square, or Bucktown. I'd personally save some money and get a more suburban lifestyle (even at the cost of living in a more "ethnic" area) out in Armour Square, Bridgeport, McKinley Park, Little Village, or Avonsdale.
All are perfectly safe if you're even mildly street smart.
