Most of society, technology and infrastructure was designed with the average person in mind.
E.g. if everyone in the world was half the height we are, then doors would only need to be half as high as well.
Same goes with planes, they were designed for the average person. The problem is that the average person has now become so much fatter and heavier that these old designs can no longer cope without taking extra steps to distribute the weight evenly for takeoff.
