The world is in an unsure state right now, and has been for some time. This image eases the mind a little to know that there are some forces in the world who are actually striving for peace and prosperity, and not looking to exploit the lives of "underlings" to create more faux conflict or even a war. Trump has done this only half way through his first time, I am almost half expecting a Mars colony by 2024.

Resources can still potentially be extracted from there should a colony be placed. The point of a colony is that it's self-sustating and has room for growth. Throwing people on a big space station habitat would work at first but quickly become costly as they'd always have to fly shit up to it (including the billions it would expanding it every time the population started to get too big)
