The great filter is more of a logical conjecture that we will be able to use at some point to determine where our biggest challenge as a species was/will be once we learn more about the State of life in the universe. It's important to remember that the assistance of life at all or life evolving to a state of she awareness are both possibly the challenge of the great barrier, not necessarily challenges ahead of us. If we find an alternative civilization more advanced than us however, the chance that the filter is ahead of us greatly increases because there's nothing to even out that average.

Probably the first evolutionary leap we passed was the evolution of multicellular organisms. Maybe, somewhere in the vast universe, and ocean planet ripe with bacterium/similar variant orbits a star, but cannot form multicellular organisms for some reason. The second being the many mass extinctions behind us. The third being smarts/communication/“human evolution.” The fourth being agriculture. The fifth being nuclear war or a similar catastrophe (so far). What will the sixth be? Is the greatest filter behind us? Or does it lie ahead? Maybe the greatest filter is the vastness if space itself, or we’ve passed it and are now hitting another evolutionary leap right now. I love this theory because it leaves so much up for speculation.

It is a theory that tries to explain the Fermi Paradox.

Personally, I don't think the Fermi Paradox is actually a paradox at all, I think that people just use a variable for the frequency of life in the equation that is far above what it actually is. I think life is just a somewhat rare thing to crop up in the galaxy, but it still likely holds a multitude of civilizations. We just have yet to actually search a decent portion of our galaxy yet.

As for the Filter theory, the idea is that at some point before or during the process of being advanced enough to communicate with another civilization, something happens that obliterates it. Either it destroys itself with its tech, it devolves back into animals, or a common natural disaster or resource shortage happens that prevents the continued utilization of technology. Some sci-fi games, shows, and books also explore the idea that it is actually an alien entity that methodically kills civilizations that get advanced enough, but in my view it's almost never a very compelling story.

It's nothing more than a thought experiment, a hypothetical answer to the question "if life in the galaxy is common, and it has existed for as long as it has, why have we not bumped into anyone else by now?" With the answer, "because they all died before they could find us."

The thought experiment makes no definitive claim that we are past the filter, however. We have either become advanced enough that we are quickly approaching the filter, or we have somehow passed through it, but both in my opinion follow the illogical presumption of historical determinism, and I don't really like the thought experiment any more than I like the Fermi Paradox which it was made to try and solve.

I typed this up myself and I don't know if it's all accurate, but I've spent a lot of time trying to understand our past and the world we currently live in and this is what I've tried to come up with. Also, the idea that we're the first life out there, is correct. The universe is ~13 billion years old. The stellerifous era is projected to last about a trillion years (after that it's just black holes and cold rocks). So we're in the first 1.3% of the universe's stellar-era lifespan. No matter anything else, yes we are the first - even if some life evolved before us, who's going to make the distinction between 12 billion years and 13 billion years 600 billion years from now? (potentially even 600 trillion years from now)

Furthermore, life couldn't have started much sooner than it did on Earth anyways. The universe had too much star formation going on -- too many GRB's, too much radiation. That may even be partially responsible for life not evolving sooner on earth to begin with.
