Really though one think about AKs is that they show a difference in design philosophy that is not tied in particular to communism, but wouldn't fly in today's America. That is a project designed for mass production in a giant factory. The Romanian, Czech, Yugoslav, Russian, Finnish and even Israeli AKs variants are made using these factories that frankly have such a huge initial investment that they'd be rejected by modern US small arms contractors. Like the US AKs that are the price point of surplus AKs or new eastern block civilian imports are all universally shit. Too many corners had to be cut to get the AKs to the correct price. To get a quality AKs made in America you gotta pay over two grand. Which is almost as much as any European rifle competitor to the AR. The AR is the perfect cheapass Lego rifle. Their versatility thanks to the expired patent has made them king of the us semiauto rifle market. Which is simultaneously a great thing and a shame. I wish I could get a decent scope mount for my mini-30 made by a third party for example, but I can also get my AR 50 Beowulf upper.

Long guns are pretty much always better for that. The ability to shoulder something with a stock makes it far easier to aim than a handgun. Handguns are nice because of their size, but even at short ranges they can be surprisingly hard to use accurately, especially if the user isn't well trained.
