While it is good to try and make government as small as possible you have to understand that large societies need a fairly hands on governing body to maintan order and functionality. People are retards and if they arent forced to behave a cetain way by authority society falls apart. Its cynical but its the truth.

Why not a strong government to control the framework in which people and the market operate freely, with the guideline being the good of the people the government is suppose to serve?

Like a Strong outer wall, protecting the people inside, allowing them to live and let live and create good contracts among themselves as they wish. With gatekeepers that control who may come inside, and make that single determination by asking the question "Is letting this in good for the people inside the walls or no?"

I'm a libertarian that fully supports carefully controlled borders. Security is one of the only legitimate reason a government has to tax.

These are pretty good critiques of meme libertarians. Anyone who thinks it's "authoritarian" to use force to protect yourself or your rights is a retard.

If we want to live in a stable and prosperous society that doesn't rely on a large central state, people need to be vigilant over their own communities, whether that means defending against physical invasion, or managing dissident behavior. But when presented with the freedom and responsibility of being your own defense force, most people will keep putting their time towards work/family/personal leisure. So instead of having localized people's militias, we have a standing army and state police.

As far as certain ideas and behaviors being inherently poisonous to society, there is no reason that local communities cannot or should not enforce whatever moral standards they see fit to keep their society running. If it is truly so, that certain moral instincts come naturally to a healthy human character, then would not do better for a society to let this moral spirit act through it's people, than to leave such matters to the interpretation of the state? True freedom is allowing individual human beings to naturally attune to this moral spirit and enforce it's will over society, rather than behaving through external compulsion.

Otherwise, as long as we as a society continue to outsource duties related to defense/security and moral authority/social order, then we get what we get.
