Look at Portland, Oregon. Specifically TriMet's MAX system, the Vine up in Vancouver, and the PDX Streetcars.
We *can* do public transit, most places don't bother though. Plus, Portland got a hesdstart with light rail in the 70s/80s. Seattle for example opened their first light rail line in the late 2000s despite being sizably bigger than Portland

Why is this a thing? Major cities can maintain millions of trees despite the need for constant trimming and other maintenance, while suburban projects seem to forbid people planting trees on their own street and even in their own yards.
The street I can almost understand, because low branches need regular trimming to avoid collisions with trucks, but homeowners associations can require residents to perform maintenance, and it mostly involves cutting tiny branches before they have a chance to grow out over the street.
