I don't know what leafs' excuse is, but the burger doctor pipeline is almost completely controlled by the MD trade guild known as the American Medical Association. The people with the strongest vested interest in limiting the supply of doctors certifies medical schools, controls the # of graduates, and governs the boards that allow you to practice medicine legally. Remind people that unions are an unqualified good when they complain about not seeing a doctor.
The American Medical Association wants a shortage to be able to keep the salaries high. It's pure cronyism. What's more, we can't even fill the shortages with doctors from Europe or elsewhere because the AMA controls the accreditation and they'll only accredit doctors with degrees from AMA-approved schools (i.e. American schools). We've got MDs from other countries here working as medical technicians because they didn't go to school in the U.S. and can't be licensed. It's one big racket.
And that's just part of why healthcare is so expensive in the U.S.. We've also got legislation that prevents competition, and on the insurance side we've got coverage mandates. Healthcare is a swamp that needs to be drained.

From an engineer's perspective most doctors I've encountered have the skill and intelligence of a technician.
This. I heard they limit the amount of specialists that get credentialed every year despite demand. Ever wonder why it takes 3 weeks to get an appointment with the dermatologist? Ask the AMA.
It'd be hilarious to ship in doctors from 3rd world countries so their salaries can be decimated like engineers.
