I grew up around guns and have been hunting a handful of times over the years. That being said, even I realize that we need to have some more gun control measures put into place. If we are going to maintain our gun rights we need to be prepared to give up some ground in other areas. It's much better to compromise than to just lose everything.
First, all guns should be required to be registered by a certain cut-off date and every private firearm sale should be required to fill out the same 4473 sheet that a business would. Failure to do either would be a felony.
Secondly, in order to own an assault rifle you must first pass through a mandatory psych evaluation. If you fail, then you don't get to own a firearm.
And finally, all ammo purchases should be subject to the same background checks as buying a firearm. People who reload ammo should be required to purchase a license in order to do so.
It might also be a good idea to consider getting rid of high capacity clips. There is really no need for them at this point.
