Holy shit all the rumours are true. This might sound strange (since I'm Chinese) but mainland Chinese...are a completely different thing. I went to Shenyang and all the memes are true. They/we do eat dog (and just about any other creature). People are incredibly money focused. People have no morals, lie, cheat, steal, you can't trust a fucking chinaman. Now all those 20th Century posters about "never trust a chinaman's coins" suddenly make sense.
To summarise, the culture there makes stealing, lieing, and being disingenoius completely ok in the name of money. With Chinese, unless you are part of the "family" (think Italian Mafia), the attitude is fuck everyone else because it's normal. It's amazing to see the power of the hivemind culture.

Dude. It's no secret Japan has always tried to mimic classical China, especially in terms of aesthetics and Buddhism. During the Heian period in Japan, the gov sent many emissaries to adopt the Chinese writing system and implement Chinese Buddhism to Japanese shintoism etc.
This is why I look at Japan so highly since they were able to preserve this cultural borrowing from 1100 to present. China was ransacked and conquered numerous times and any culture we had left in China was completely destroyed during the Cultural Revolution of 1966-1976

I lived in China for almost 4 years. It was a terrible place. The culture is absolutely awful. No respect for life, no respect for other people (except maybe close family members), no sense of decency. They will do ANYTHING if they think they can get away with it. Simple rules like traffic laws, anti-littering laws and no smoking signs are completely ignored by the vast majority of people. I moved to Japan and it was the complete opposite. Just a random example: I lost my wallet once in China, of course I never saw it again. I lost my wallet like 3 times in Japan and got it back every time, always with the money still inside.
