Back around 2001-2003, when many newspapers still had open online comment sections, I noticed something weird. I was still reading four or five mainstream papers online out of UK.

I noticed that way down in some comments sections on some stories, individuals were connecting a story on, say, concerns about a neighborhood/town issue to their concern about disappearances of girls in northern England.

I've got a Jow Forums-tier Pattern Recognition Module (and don't rely on confirmation bias), so after about the sixth or seventh time this happened, I started looking for it.

It was a pattern. Soon people were answering the people who expressed these concerns. And soon the comments were like, "I've seen the same thing in Place X." "I know someone with the same concern." "I have gone to my local council/police, but they ignore my concern." "I saw a man being arrested and friends said he was looking for his missing daughter."

On and on.

Then something even scarier started happening, probably around 2005 or so. I'd be reading comments on particular themed stories, looking for these comments, and I'd see them. But then half an hour or an hour later...they'd be gone. Someone was specifically removing those comments.
