It was impossible for them to hold on to Algeria. They just came off WW2, their economy was getting weaker and weaker, due to Guerllia tactics by the FLN a lot of Frenchmen were fleeing the country, and many in France were opposed to the war since they were basically just sending more soldiers to die.
