In the same way that Chinese and Japanese would recognize themselves as being racially the same, but not in a way that binds them together in brotherhood and harmony. Ethnicity was a larger factor even in America as recently as the 1940s, at least in the north. All of the 'whites' in Chicago or Philadelphia would have thought of themselves as Irish or Lithuanian or Polish first, and it wasn't until mass-suburbia and the breaking up of ethnic enclaves that those identities were lost. It was only common in the South were the only information it conveyed was 'not a nigger'. And if 'not a nigger' is a better basis for identity and history than Polish or Irish or Italian history and culture, i'd love to hear why.
