Actually, it involves getting what's called "byes" before a big tournament, which means rounds that you don't have to play at the tournament, and that you automatically win. The only way to win a tournament is basically getting 3 byes. That way, you are statistically expected to be at the top even if you relatively lose as many games as the rest of players, as the game is fucking random.

Another thing too is that cheating in MTG is extremely fucking easy and almost impossible to get caught. Mana weaving is almost not against the rules it is used so much. Unless your game is recorded at a tournament swapping cards out of your hand or having more than 4 copies is possible too. The judges are too beta and avoid confrontation at all costs so they won't accuse you of shit. Even more so if you are a woman, because to them that would be misogyny or something.
