Basic gestalt: low-IQ native Hawaiians want all telescopes removed from the summit of Mauna Kea.
This shit is fucking unacceptable as well as racist against the White scientists who have labored tirelessly for years to understand the Universe by building these fucking enormous miracles of engineering.
What makes a telescope work is that the entire mirror (can be ~100 feet across) is smooth and the right shape to within 1 wavelength of light (~500nm or ~0.00001 inches). Not to mention the robot-controlled adaptive optics, data analysis, mirror recoating facilities, high-bit-depth cameras, etc. etc. We're talking billions of dollars for high-IQ people to sit in the dark for years to do this shit. It's as hard as rocket science. Dumb people literally cannot do this work.
It's important for, oh i don't know, FINDING EXOPLANETS. Existing telescopes have found thousands of exoplanets, some of which are Earth-like. Not to mention scouting the skies to rule out incoming Deep Impacts and Ayys.
Mauna Kea Observatory is the best observing site in the northern hemisphere. Big telescopes need high elevations, dry weather, and dark skies...things that are found basically nowhere on Earth except for a few mountains. Mauna Kea is the best place on Earth to see the Northern half of the sky.
The natives successfully blocked TMT construction; next they want all the telescopes GONE. They're trying to get the lease pulled via lobbying and the court system. This must not happen...it would cripple human progress in astronomy.
WHAT TO MEME: Boycott Hawaii until they guarantee the Observatory's right to exist. If necessary, rename the TMT to the Trump Telescope as part of an Executive Order.

the natives think the telescopes don't benefit them in any way, while blocking the telescopes lets them feel powerful and gets them more benefits in the short term. for example, they recently added a "guard hut" next to their protest encampment on the road leading up to the telescopes, and they ask for "donations" from passerby who don't know any better.
the natives in hawaii are a lot like the natives elsewhere in the usa: they have some real problems in their communities (drinking, crime, generational poverty) and basically have been fucked since they had to compete with non-native outsiders starting 200 years ago. they tend to live in the shitty, run-down parts of hawaii. they want to improve their lives, but for whatever reason they can't.
the TMT project did an outreach program costing millions of dollars to raise awareness of the telescopes and the work they do, unfortunately this seems to have backfired.
A White friend with hapa kids there told me "it's not good for kids to look too White in hawaii public schools". Scientists there typically were raised and educated elsewhere long before moving to Hawaii.
Totally, though I disagree... Understand that white people do this for Reasons that are good. In the beginning people like us, Not too different, were Going to the frontiers to make a new home.
