I lived in Syria for 7 years (left before the war got too serious).
Besides the fact that you couldn't publicly criticize him (or his father, check out the Hamas massacre), the country was doing fine. I mean internet freedom was VERY restricted (no youtube), the streets were clean, prices were (very) low, the food was cheap and tasted better than anything I've ever eaten, there was practically no one living in the streets and the people there were very tolerant. I mean we had a christian block in the center of Dumar and even when they celebrated christmas the muslims came and wished them happy festivities. Out of all Muslim countries I've lived in (Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, Tunisia, Turkey), Syria is the one I wish I stayed longer. It's a shame what happened to them, considering ISIS is mostly made up of foreign mercenaries.
