Technically Kentucky fought for both sides just like many states did. Plenty of southern states had Union regiments and I know Illinois at least provided around 10k troops to the Confederacy. Not to mention an Ohio House of Rep. wanted the Midwest to secede and form it's own confederacy and ally the CSA against the federal government. The Civil War was really messy business in terms of allegiances.
