Parents arrested for illegal entry sometimes make an asylum claim. They are detained immediately so their case can be quickly litigated. Children can't be detained for more than 20 days according to the Flores settlement of 1997. After the 20 days the kids have to go to a detention center. Their reunited when a decision is made on their asylum status.
Trump didn't make a law separating kids from their parents. He's following a law that would (unfortunately) result in temporary separation.
