I don't know much about guns but there was this guy I've watched that explained why they are using 9mm instead something stronger. It was about reliability in such situations, basically a 9mm has decent stopping power and penetration and from what most FBI agents were reporting is that there is no better solution since there were cases where a suspect was shot through heart during a shootout and still was able to return fire for about 1-2mins before he bled to death (thanks to adrenaline,endorphins rush plus drugs) yet higher rounds were unreliable in such situations due to the recoil and weight. Also during the switch to higher caliber more officers during their shooting range test were getting lower scores due to the higher recoil thus FBI rolled back to 9mm to avoid statistic drop. As I said I'm not really a gun specialist, just throwing that out so correct me if I'm wrong.

The video is actually just about how to treat them but obviously he has to cover the impact of various types of gunshot wounds in order to do that.

with modern trauma medicine, only something like 15% of people intentionally shot with a pistol actually die.

the simple reason is that pistol rounds only do much damage to tissue they poke holes directly through (which expanding/hollow point aids a bit by making the holes bigger), and the parts of your body that will actually make you bleed out immediately are deceptively small: your heart, aorta, vena cava, and handful of the most major arteries and veins. getting shot by most handgun rounds through a lung or even a surprisingly large percentage of your brain won't kill you immediately.

intermediate and larger caliber rifle rounds on the other hand will wreck shit horribly, since the kinetic energy is so much higher, to the point that impact shock waves make momentary empty balloons inside a body the size of a bowling ball, which tears a lot more blood vessels open than just the ones the bullet directly passes through.
