A large portion of the population can be a net drain on the tax system and the economy will still grow. Taxes are not the deciding factor for what makes an economy great. The economy is made great when all of the consumers get what they want and when all of the producers are well-funded enough to innovate. Giving poor people money helps this process; it also helps to not completely gouge the rich, it's a delicate balance.
The only problem with open immigration that I have is demographic shift and the potential effects to the average IQ of Americans. What will happen to America? Obviously there is a sweet spot for how many immigrants you want, what qualities they have, and where they come from. Deciding that is a difficult process. The problem can be rectified with genetic engineering. Hopefully scientific progress continues.
Climate change will make the border a very volatile place. It's like a pressure cooker. Trump is blocking off Mexico and it's only getting hotter down there.
