I was just talking to my dad about this the other day, as we were both born and raised in humboldt county and he was a logger from the late 70s into the 90s.
He explained that when Pacific Lumber Company was running the show, as they had since the 1800s, they were actually pretty focused on conservation. They wanted the lumber resource to last simply because it made good business sense. He told we they would do "thirty percent clears" meaning that they would harvest 70% of the trees and leave the rest to reseed the forest. This practice allowed a single stand to be harvested repeatedly every 20-50 years. Funny enough, they would often leave a lot of the bigger trees like in ops pic as they were the most difficult to extract and mill. (1/2)

Fucking sucks they cut so many down. Damn shame, but they either didn't think the supply would run out so quickly or just figured that the money was worth it. A lot of California's first houses were built with that wood, it has some sort of quality that makes it resistant to either termites or fire but I don't remember which. I'm not one to overplay the fragility of the environment, but more of these giants should've been set aside for protection. Cut down a number of them and use that land to farm more redwoods of economic size, taking them all down because it was easy and profitable was short-sighted and at some level they all probably understood that. Too bad.
A tragic mismanagement of something so beautiful. Sequoia National Park still exists, and the giant redwood still exists, just not as giant as these were.

I study forestry so it's not like the concept of cutting down trees offends me but fuck, imagine the sort of massive trees that disappeared into the sawmills which would have dwarfed even the tallest redwoods left standing today.

At least redwood is a quality wood so it's not like it went to waste, the Giant Sequoias they cut down on the other hand did not even go towards making valuable products because the wood is so garbage that many trunks broke simply upon hitting the ground after being felled.
