So this is an uninformed, very simple question, but this is one thing I don't understand:
Why separate the parents and kids instead of just sending them all back together? Isn't the idea that they're illegal immigrants to be deported? Why detain the parents, keep the kids in cages (incredibly bad optics), instead of just taking them back to the border and turning them loose.
This isn't a policy suggestion. I'm really just trying to understand the current system.

In the past we've put families into "family detention centers," because while we can legally hold the parents in jail while they await deportation, it was felt that separating them from their children was unnecessarily cruel.
The current backlash is due to the decision to start putting the parents in jail and keeping the children in separate facilities. The idea is that it'll act as a deterrent to prevent people from coming over as families. It is of course perfectly legal, but a lot of people are understandably uncomfortable with the idea of forcibly separating families. You may agree or disagree if you like.
Note that this is a difference in how we enforce the law, not whether or not the law is enforced.

The people that are getting detained and separated from their kids are the people that are contesting the deportation. It's also happening to people who aren't contesting but for a lot less time, they still gotta go through the process, then are sent back as a family after pleasing guilty. Are you asking why CBP and/or ICE doesn't just dump them right over as soon as they catch them? Because it would be a violation of their rights. When you're in the US, even if you're there illegally, you're still afforded Constitutional protections. It has it's pit falls, but I ultimately think it's a good idea.
Issue is that once they put one toe into the US, they're protected by the US constitution and can't be thrown out without due process.
In normal deportation proceedings, "due process" just means whether or not they have a visa. But if they contest the deportation and apply for asylum, there's a whole system to go through involving the courts. I'm not a lawyer, so I'm not sure how much of this system is discretionary policy of the executive branch and how much is required by legislation, but they're having trouble trimming it down to efficiently process all the people we're getting.

Not having it puts in on that slope of restricting Constitutional rights which are under attack enough as it is. If you're in custody of the US government, you should have Constitutional protections, full stop.
The Flores decision came about because they didn't want unaccompanied minors in the general detention population. It was literally "please think of the children, we have to protect them from the general detention population", and it was pushed by Democrats.
But, the enforcement of it was not always done, and the need to do it wasn't as high as today - since today the immigrants are told to bring children, as they believe it will give them a higher chance of being let in (which it did when the rules weren't being enforced).
When Trump came in he simply directed the agencies to follow and uphold existing law. So now Trump is Hitler for enforcing a rule that was basically implemented by California Democrats under the "think of the children" guise.
It's yet another Democrat projection, and it's simply icing on the cake that most of the photos are from the Obama era.
Forgot to add, the other reason there are more "separations" now than in the past is because the immigrants come with any old random children, because that used to be a free pass into the country (when the rules weren't being enforced). Now they're actually checking to see if it's a real family or not, and if they're not related, they're "separated" as per the Democrat implemented rules. The actual families are not separated, contrary to what the media claims.
Also, the media says Trump is now enforcing with "zero tolerance", which is simply a dishonest, fearmongering way of saying Trump is enforcing existing law.

1. They are separated to determine if the people taking them across the border illegally are actually their parents or some kind of human trafficker going to sell them as sex slaves to some rich pedophile in Washington.
2. No separation occurs if the crossing occurs legally. If they simply present themselves at one of the 18 legal crossing checkpoints, no separation occurs.
Back to point 1, human trafficking and smuggling is a HUGE fucking problem. Many children are kidnapped solely because having a child with you gets you a free pass in to the USA. Whenever someone crosses illegally with a child, there's no way of telling if that child is actually theirs, or if the child was kidnapped for an insurance policy in case they were caught, or if the child was kidnapped and is being smuggled as part of a human trafficking ring to be sold off.
The separation MUST occur to find out because if the child isn't questioned away from the "parent" or "hostage taker" whichever it may be, the child is not going to tell the truth. They will be intimidated by the kidnapper who will have told the child they will be killed or their parents killed if they do not swear that the kidnapper is their legal guardian. Once they are separated and the child can be put at ease, given food, and water, gets to sit and watch cartoons in a comfy processing station, etc. they will be more likely to overcome any fear they may have of the kidnapper and tell the truth. Especially after being questioned multiple times about things like how long they have known the kidnapper, where they were born, how many siblings do they have, etc. They can cross answers with the kidnapper even if the child is too scared to tell the truth and see if the stories and answers match up.
The democrats and media pushing so hard against the separation are essentially advocating for human trafficking to be made easier.

Well naturally when you arrest someone to investigate a crime you instantly institute a punishment, OP. When a drug offender is pulled over with drugs and his kids are in the car, they in fact send the child and the parents both to an adult jail where they share a cell together and they're instantly convicted and punished without trial or investigation. Untrue, in the past they were briefly held and then released with court dates. Unsurprisingly, none of them showed up to the court dates and the Obama administration allowed them to carry on in America and their children were allowed to go to US public schools and collect scholarships for college etc without paying taxes. Because of this, parents and South and Central America sent their kids unaccompanied to the US, which resulted in 20,000 unaccompanied minors being held during the Obama administration (far more than currently).
Now, crossing the border is enforced as a crime and the parents are detained. Whenever a mother in this country is detained the children are taken away. If they are American the kids are put into foster care. Because we have no legislation, there is no where to put these kids and no guidelines on how this should be handled, so instead we have kids in centers throughout the country. The detention centers being shilled are temporary until the kids are sent to one of 13 more permanent facilities across the country which were also used during the Obama administration.
Also, the cages were from Obama. They were put of the temporary detainment and were used to deal with the aforementioned swell of unaccompanied minors being picked up at the border.

its not really "contesting" they are trying to claim asylum. under international law they have to have a hearing for asylum. the problem before was that people were claiming asylum, released and then never showed up to court. now they are detained until they can be heard in court and while the parents are detained, the kids are detained separately as they cannot put them with the adults.

All I know is they start in the cages for a few hours while under border control authority, then I'm pretty sure he said they were turned over to ICE. idk how they are kept with ICE, but the dorms like in the pic are controlled by HHS, who is the last stop for the kids where they might be held for a month or two.
