the reason these kids are in a detention center is due to laws and policies against child trafficking.

these have been in place and are standard in trying to ascertain whether the accompanying adult is actually related to the child since 99% of the people who cross the border have no identification on them. and that's on purpose.

by law, we have to have an actual court hearing in front of a judge to determine asylum status. since we are so back logged and bogged down, what ends up happening is a deferred court date in the future, they then put them on "probation" and release both child and adult to some family in the U.S. and sometimes they just release them to people they know. then ofc, they just fucking disappear.

this keeps happening over and over again and it's very, very difficult to find out who is who and if trafficking is going on. the solution is just to call all of this child trafficking and send them both back to the Mexican authorities post haste, denying them an asylum hearing.
