Don't sweat it. I was a late bloomer, too. I was in my mid twenties when I finally managed to grasp all the "simple" logic (mathematicians like to also (over)use the term "trivial" here) required to pass university level Linear Algebra and Calculus exams (the mathematicians' variety, not the engineers') after failing them a couple of times previously.
The Heinleinian ideal is tough to fully achieve in young years. If his grasp of math is not that great, yet , maybe try to get him interested in planning invasions or conning ships for now :-)
