interesting. There is no legal requirement for the release of tax returns. Yet states do set arbitrary requirements for ballot access, such as minimum signatures etc, so at the least this requirement would have to apply to all candidates and not just a single person, which in itself is illegal.

This is TECHNICALLY true. States CAN set their own rules for getting on ballots. That said, this is a gross abuse of any citizen's 4th amendment rights to privacy in their effects and can and will be challenged.
