Human intelligence and reason isn't going to convince someone who's convicted in their beliefs to reconsider and examine their worldview. Reason and understanding can be used to create or find an framework that is functionally better but anybody who is convicted the way they found is better won't listen to arguement. You might not be able to persuade them of anything, but they are always working to bring more people to their side, and if you can put yourself in a position between them and an audience, you can defuse their arguments.

Their arguments started in academic departments and ran roughshod over the old guard, and now they dominate the departments. They don't yet dominate the public, but they are working on it. It's worth giving it a shot to try to stop them, but we need all the ammunition we can muster. The fact that they were able to outargue all the old professors shows that there is something about their arguments that is particularly difficult, and it's not that they are right. There are other reasons, and we have to identify them and figure out a way to neutralize those things.
