I think the deepest he got was some of the story arcs he did in the 80's and 90's, but that's about it. I've never seen stuff that connects to current day stuff.
I'm convinced that he paid a writing then design staff to create thousands of strips every few years.
Watterson, however, was able to make ideological strips that touched on deeper political and philosophical underpinnings.

Once you understand the long-standing set up of jokes and the developments of each character, the context of every new comic rewards the dedicated fans with inside humor. To be fair, Jim Davis is the pinnacle of short-panel humor, and those who disagree are simply contrarians who enjoy mediocre forms of comedy.
Each character represents a personality archetype that anyone can relate to. For example, Garfield represents those of us who are practical, a bit lazy, and pessimistic. Jon is a bit naive and foolish. Odie is aloof and optimistic, and Jon's love interested is a prudish cunt reflecting the modern state of femininity.
Honestly, I feel kinda bad for those of you who will never be able to find the comedic value of Garfield, but I guess not of all us were born with such refined tastes.
