My dad would read to me. When i was young he would read to me, when i was a teenager playing video games he would be there reading out loud from some book or another. He never talked about politics that firmly, occasionally sharing some remark or opinion but never really going into things.
When he died i looked through his things. I discovered he knew, he knew about everything, he just didnt try to tell me. Instead he read books to me, history books, classic novels, that sort of thing. I developed more or less the same political opinions he did with out him ever telling me.

I think he knew what he was doing. You cant tell a kid what to think, they will simply parrot it when they are young then rebel from it when they are older. So instead he made sure i had perspective and was exposed to more than just the things they wanted me to be.

He himself was very humble, and im sure there are people on Jow Forums who wouldnt think so highly of him. He was not materialistic at all, and what he did have he would give to others. He let a family stay at his house with him for over a year when i was young, if someone needed a coat he would give them his coat, things like that. He was poor as a result of this, earlier in life he was a truck driver and later in life he just lived in a house my uncle owned keeping it cleaned up. He spent his time volunteering at the local college, he was friends with a coach and ran the scoreboards when there were games since there was no money to hire anyone to do it. When wed go camping he would spend his time picking up trash. It was a sort of ritual for him, any time he went anywhere he would try to pick up at least one piece of trash and throw it away properly. Some on Jow Forums would think badly of him for not having money and basically living off charity, but i realize he was some kind of ascetic just trying to distance himself from the world.

We've had a pretty weird relationship. Didn't like him for most of my life but he's my go to for practical advice.

He died of lung cancer, you may think it was because he smoked, he did smoke extensively, but he was also an air-conditioning engineer. I worked with him doing that for a little bit and with the amount of shit I breathed in doing that for a few weeks, I'm pretty sure a lifetime of that's what really did him in.

He was really into cars, and always seemed kinda disappointed that I wasn't particularly into them. I was into computers which he thought was neat, but I was more into what you can do with computers and software, so whenever I had to deal with hardware, I would have an idea of what I was doing but was usually uncertain and in no way an expert and that confused him.

He was generally kind of grumpy and arrogant. Our entire house if full of unfinished DIY, where he would stop just at the level of it sort of working, then get lazy and leave it like that for decades, because he was too proud to actually bring someone in to do the job, but too lazy to actually finish it off himself. He died as he was building a kit car, he was building it for over a decade and regulations kept changing as he was doing it and so he never got done with it, I think that sums him up pretty well. We sold what was done of it to a family friend who finished it up in a couple of months and sold it off.
