No, the whole reason we use states is because we are supposed to have a distant national government to deal with overarching issues like war and smaller state governments that are supposed to more directly deal with daily issues, plus it is a system to prevent corruption.

That was the result of a compromise Congress made to settle the feud Michigan territory had with Ohio over the city of Toledo. Ohio got Toledo in exchange for Michigan getting the northern parts.

That was due to an agreement to make the official American and British Canada border start at the most north western part of that lake then continue down the 49th parallel westward. At the time they didn't exactly know where the most northwest part of the lake was so when they found out it created that weird bit of isolated American land.
