The supreme court case was about freedom of speech surprisingly. The cake shop owner didnt refuse to sell them a premade cake, he didnt refuse them service. That is illegal under anti discrimination and civil rights acts.

He claimed that making them a wedding cake, using brushes etc was a piece of art. The underlying argument that art is a form of expression, a form of speech and protected under the freedom of speech.

In the same way that an artist who writes songs for a living, might refuse writing a song for the KKK meeting. He didnt refuse them service, but refused on the basis of freedom of speech.
