The electoral college was literally designed to make the popular vote count less. That is its purpose.

When forming the USA from a bunch of separate states, small population states said "we aint gonna join this union because you big population states will just dictate how we have to live."

Big pop states said "how bout we make this electoral bullshit so small pop states count for more votes."

Small pop states said okay. Thus the USA was born.

If you revoke the electoral college, you must also allow all states the opportunity to secede, because you are backing out of the terms of the union that formed the USA.

You get money from big states, even if you don't win them. So even in safe spots the opposition camp will show up to court and campaign, because the 1/3rd of the population that supports them still has shitloads of logistical support to provide.

Where as small states actually change with some frequency, making at least 6 rural areas hotly contested each election.

So, each candidate must address both rural and urban areas, for both the short game and the long game.

For anyone too stupid to pay attention in grade school, electoral votes are equal to a states number of representatives in Congress and the house of representatives. States get 2 congressmen and a number of representatives for the house depending on the population of the state.
What this means in practice is that states like California or Arkansas that have voted straight one way for 4 decades get considerably less campaign time than swing States, while states like Texas and california are pandered to when candidates announce policy and campaign promises.

anyone who can't pass a 20 question multiple choice test about the basic functionality of our electoral system shouldn't be allowed to cast a vote.

'what are the three branches of government?'

'what is the difference between congress and the senate?'

'what are the legal requirements to be eligible to run for president?'

With the electoral college, the candidate must solve a variety of issues for many different people of different walks of life for the vote.
Without the electoral college, you only have to get a majority vote, which means you must pander to the big cities’ problems and ignore the others. No problems for anyone else are solved, as they are silenced by the big cities.

Thus both the peoples interest, and the State's interest are both represented. This was a preferred system before we changed it, but morons didn't understand. It would seem weird because you're giving voting power to the government, but that was when state governments had less corruption due to a more direct control by the people.

Without the electoral college, states with a high population ie California and New York would control the country, which in turn doesn’t give the other states a voice. We had this same issue before the civil war. This is what the Union came up with to satisfy southern states.

The Electoral College combines proportionality for population but equals it out for state power
The United States of America is a large federation of 51 states, many of whom are different in industry, values and demographics.
Smaller states would lose their votes under a popular vote system, while if we went for an equal state vote where each state got one vote then the big states would lose votes.
This is the best compromise they could think of, although in my opinion the Electoral College should be reformed so that each states' votes should be wholly given to the candidate they voted for without any electors.

USA is Constitutional Republic. The whole point of it is to protect the minority from the majority. The EC is the compromise the founding fathers came up with they foresaw this.

If the small states feel they have no say in government they can start doing awful things to your shipments of food and other stuff. They can even advocate for secession. Civil wars break out when the people who control your trucking routes get restless. City fags quake with fear at the mere sight of a gun or an unsecured roof top.

If it was based on popular vote, you would only see candidates spend 90% of their campaign in like six states and the remaining 10% where the population is above 6M. They would flat-out ignore 30+ states.
