Yeah, shit sucks. Nice career when you do finally get in.

It's pretty good where i live (Scotland) as the demand for people with STEM degrees is high and the supply of businesses is also high - sure, they are not Google or Facebook (they are all small to mid sized firms) - but the pay is good and easily climb the ladder as the businesses are SME.

coming from a country where there's only 100 graduated engineers for every 2000 lawyers, I have plenty of job offers even I'm still a student.
Society really appreciates people who go to the point, get shit done and don't rabblerouse pretentiously intellectual nonsense for a living.
You only need professional skills, and to know the right people by not being an autistic asshole

I've been out of Uni 1 year, I've managed to secure exactly no jobs in that time. I have excellent references, I've developed and maintained a lot of my own applications, my portfolio is great. I have a exceptional understand of a broad range of modern technology. Why can't I get a job?

The only job that wasn't a truly awful unpaid internship that still wanted 3 years experience in the industry..wtf, was at a medical software development company, I went in for the interview and to my horror it was just me and a Indian lady in the waiting room. I knew my chances of getting the job at this point were absolutely fucking zero, but I still had a modicum of hope. Sure of fuck affirmative action screwed me over, I've finally given in and had to get a survival job. 5 years on my Bachelor of Computer Science minoring in mathematics reduced to working at maccas...

Anyone here considering lying about being mexican or something? Not like they can check.

Been working as an electrical engineer for about 15 years. Retiring this year. Worked for me.

What type of work do you do?

Uhh retiring after 15 years? Even if you saved 50k a year that's still only 750k.

Did you collect on your parents life insurance policy or something?

can an american move there?

Going to college this fall, and I really want to get a degree in bioengineering, specifically neuroengineering or genetic engineering. Is it worth it?

I'm self-employed. Billing yourself out at $130/hr minimum adds up pretty quick. I do NOT recommend working for someone else. Go direct to the customer and get yourself good professional liability insurance coverage.

If you can't get an interview you aren't networking hard enough. It's "who you know" a lot of the time. 40% of jobs are filled every year without even being posted so they can be applied to. Go meet some people in your industry and let them know you're looking for a career. Don't just sit on your ass and put in applications, some places don't even look at an app without knowing the person first.

Bioengineering has historically been a flop. Pays like shit (just a little bit better than biology, plus the jobs are scarce). That being said, it may be picking up over the next few decades with all the breakthroughs in genetic engineering we're seeing (everything from 23andme to the inevitable embryonic editing that will occur in our lifetimes) ..

Yes, but what type of work do you do? What's your product?

>but your boy can't even get an interview.
probably because you're a nigger

It’s the game of applying for a ton of interviews like fuck.

It's not a meme, I'm an idiot and I still managed to get a 70k salary. The only people I know who haven't gotten jobs since graduation are lazy pieces of shit.

Here are some pro-tips:

1) Actually try. Seriously, if you're a moron but you put in effort, you'll get something.

2) Be willing to move if you live in a city with a lot of competition (such as NYC).

Any other questions, feel free to ask.

Power engineering, friend. No shortage of work, but nobody goes into it because it isn't cool high tech Google shit.

What's your methodology? I've had my resume professionally reworked a couple times, and everyone I know in the industry knows I'm looking for a job. Still nothing is panning out.

My methodology was to go through the Fortune 500 list, one by one, and apply to everything I thought I might be qualified for. Then when I got a call back, I would go on Glassdoor, see what questions others were asked and study the shit out of those questions. I also aimed for companies I knew had easier interviews than others since I have really bad anxiety and knew I'd never get passed something that required solving a Leetcode type question on the spot.

Also, being willing to leave NYC for work helped a ton. My commute to work is 5 minutes and I actually get to keep most of my paycheck.

Thoughts on pursuing a masters in engineering or calling it quits at bachelors?

Sorry, but it's STEAM now, get it right!

Aren't you part Native American or Hispanic or something? Wink, wink, nudge, nudge.

Nothing matters more than how intelligent you are and how effective you are at communicating that intelligence. a Masters degree doesn't matter much, it's just icing on the cake. But you can have no degree and land a job with Google if you're smart enough.

Aren't you part Native American or Hispanic or something? Wink, wink, nudge, nudge.

Nothing wrong with art/design. People that actually produce quality work will actually value the importance of math and critical thinking. Vagina blood murals are not art.

I got a business degree after my engineering undergrad and got an offer about 30k higher than I would have had I received a job through undergrad. Plus I have a higher ceiling for moving up in the company should I choose to stay.

Just got hired, 74k outta college my dude

Computer programmers and Phone App programmers in the year 2030, will be the equivalent of TV Repairmen in the current day, there will be no demand for them, the phones will be so cheap and disposable by then, most apps imaginable will have already been created and perfected by then - only minor tweaking will be needed for them in the far-future

even already, if you look at the Top 10 big websites (facebook, twitter, google, ebay, craigslist, youtube, netflix, the porn sites...), all of those websites were created MORE than 10 years ago, minor tweaking will be taking place on them, but nothing new of major substance will be created

Entry level, sure, but the demand for people with 5, 10, 15 years of experience will still be very high.

Sounds like the dogfights in Vietnam argument.

>what is maintenance, updates, and competition

>it's just icing on the cake
Yeah, I've heard this. Combined with the fact that you're paying to be out of the workforce for 2-3 years makes me think go B.S.
>have no degree and land a job with Google
Programming is kind of it's own strange creature. I'm EE.

Glad you chimed in because I'm seriously considering this. Seems like sky's the limit when you can be technically oriented and not be a total autist. I'm sure it's something of a crapshoot getting a sweet gig if you got your degree from Podunk U though.

I got hundreds of interviews soon after college as a Computer Science major. Only because I moved away from my shit town.

Aerospace engineer here, who is now doing mostly software.

I don't really like coding that much. I can muddle through most of what I have to deal with coding-wise. I liked aerospace work but after a long while I realized I just have a fascination with historical aircraft, and don't really care about all the math and physics.

I'm thinking of just switching into IT. Red Hat Certified Engineers make decent money.

I feel you. Been months since I had an interview and I graduated BSc honors biochem. Thesis project, top of class, offered masters/phd position etc. I miss the lab fierce, but at one point I just gave up sifting through all the "5 years experience for $16/h" shit and because an indie game dev full time.

and became*

I’m almost done with my 2nd year of college, you guys have me worried.

EE here working in DSP

Not knowing about compounding interest. Though I am sure that the guy you are commenting on is lying but is it possible

The US will be flush with software engineering jobs within the next 10-20 years. The medical field is also projected for like 20% more employment. You're fine. These butthurt euros are probably hacks. That's my honest opinion.

What was your major?

Healthcare is a way better field in America

which flavor did you learn?
EE employment is >99%.
i can't swing a dead cat without hitting 3 headhunters.

Just finished a master's in comp sci, have a graduate job lined up as a software engineer in the defence industry 27k starting. I did an internship after 2nd year over summer which greatly helped and was GOAT (tanks and shieet).

If you apply yourself to your studies and seriously apply for internships and graduate programs you'll go to good places.

>Combined with the fact that you're paying to be out of the workforce for 2-3 years
lol, no.
they pay you + full ride.
NEVER pay for an advanced degree in engineering.

>27k starting
i was getting that out of highscool with no degree working in IT.

You're out of date. Now it's STREAM.

Attached: STREAM Stations-web_1.jpg (380x300, 16K)

You can't be self employed as power engineer. Do you really have enough money to own a refinery or a power plant?

>cant consult

Jow Forums should use their STEM knowledge to cure aging.

>>Who here fell for the STEM meme?
>BA(yeah yeah, only a BA) in engineering
>$85k starter salary
Me, I guess

Did IT security specialization. Started my own company, now I make 7 figures easy 5 years after graduating.
Kicking ass is easy

Should have fell for the STEAM meme

Compsci?

nah
Networking and Information Technology Security
with a business minor.
Started my own webdev company while studying and was pulling in just under 6 figures by fourth year

>NEVER pay for an advanced degree in engineering.
Checked and heeded. I have never heard this however. Even guys with shit-hot GPA's that net themselves great internships seem like they find themselves doing the old TA + debt route in grad (yes EE). Care to elaborate?

Attached: 1de.gif (627x502, 940K)

Nice! You're catching up to those Wendy's chefs!

>reading
>career path

It's true. If you're worth it a uni will pay for your entire masters+phd plus a basic living expense stipend.

is this a meme? i feel old, what are you talking about?

Actually it's STREAMED

Science
Tech
Reality
Engineering
Artisans
Math
Emotions
Dick

>a uni will pay
Ah. Got it. Will undergo melatonin and hormone therapy as needed. I thought you were talking about something obtainable.

I have a friend currently doing this, and he didn't even have to crossdress. That's more of a liberal arts thing.

Or being a woman. With all this shit going on ducking say you’re a female half big half Indian who cares

4.333 GPA and well-connected parents? I have a hard time believing this is a thing for anybody within a couple standard deviations of average.

Also melanin not melatonin FUCK!

>melatonin
You mean melanin, right?

And how the fuck do you do this?

"Oh hey man you work in my industry? I need a job mate"

He had far from a perfect GPA, and he's never even been to the state of the school he's going to. Obviously he's above average, which is part of what I implied with "if you're worth it".

It's not really that great of a deal for the first while anyway, since you could spend those years working and making money, and still see a substantial pay increase over that time. 65k starting vs waiting 4-8 more years and making effectively 10-12k is a big difference.

This man speaks the truth. I got an entry level finance position with a decent sized company at 65k with a 4-year Mathematics m.computer science. At 82k 3 years in. I don't do shit. Trig twice a week to project finances and help design software. I probably do like.. two hours of work a week.

They have job fairs at most unis. Also, you should be looking at tech and manufacturing companies around you to see if they hire interns, and try to get on in those places.

How old were you, damn

I put Appalachian on all my applications for anything

I graduated a shitty art school and ended up in STEM. Feels good having a comfy desk job.

21-22, it was so easy. I made a new website for a local golf course, picked up like 10 clients from that, then it just spawned from there. I was just trying to juggle clients and pacify them until I finished my degree cuz I couldn't handle the work load. After I graduate I started a security firm and double dipped with all existing customers. Now thanks the whole russia hacking thing I can't staff anywhere near fast enough to keep up with demand. Everyone wants IT security. I don't even advertise

I'm one year away from my B.S. in biochemistry. I would like to just enter the workforce at that point. I landed a nice paid internship for this summer but something tells me that my luck is going to run out after graduation. Any biochem fags on here who can give me some advice?

>Want to enter the workforce asap
Physicians Assistant or Anesthesiologist Assistant. Worth the extra two years.

That's very nice man

I'm 24 and only in 2nd year CS, have been thinking for a while now about going into IT security with my own company

Just want a simple life with a nice family friends and die

The anesthesiologist assistant route seems tempting. That is definitely an option to consider especially since I don't have any intention of pursuing a PhD. But how useful would my BS be just on its own you think?

Graduated with a bachelors in biotech. No jobs so I stayed on for honours.

Graduated with a first class honours. No jobs again so applied for a PhD and got a full ride scholarship.

Graduated with my PhD. No jobs again but no further path to study. Wallowed for about 18 months, applying for just about everything with no luck at all. Got 3 phone interviews and 1 face to face but didn't get anything. Made do by moving back in with parents and doing some tutoring, gardening and worked as a removalist for a while.

Then... randomly got into contact with a guy who offered to refer me at his workplace. Work was barely relevant to my PhD, but I got through the door and learned quickly.

1 year later I got promoted to a more senior position, 1 year later I was promoted to management, and another 3 years later I became a country wide consultant in my PhD field of expertise.

STEM is viable, but you need to be prepared to eat a mountain of shit to get to the good parts. If you haven't dreamed of being injured/sick enough to have a break from job searching you aren't really having an authentic STEM job search experience.

Networking is extremely important. Be prepared to move and have a car and drivers license. Present yourself as someone better than who you are. Little lies are okay, but you'll just fuck yourself up long term by making a habit of it. As a rule, don't outright fabricate experience, but you can probably get away with exaggerating it.

And most importantly, if you do get your foot in the door, bust your arse to make your workplace feel like they made the right decision.

For someone that needs a lot of math classes, how do I start understanding math? I get how stuff works easily but I just can’t understand how it fits in the bigger picture. I don’t really know how to think critically with math and just follow the rules I already know. I’ve always been good at math but I can’t say I understand exactly how it translates to real world stuff. I’m barely going to take pre calculus this fall after coming back to school(highest level I took in ha was geometry). I’m just scared I’ll never get passed that block of not really seeing what it means, instead of just how it works. Not really sure if I’m being clear enough too

Fuck man Australia is fucked for High skiled graduate jobs. I am planning to find a country overseas and fuck off there even if its to teach english or some shit while trying to finesse a job there

Wish i could use the Civil Eng degree but what countries need it pol?? Maybe Dubai please pol what places suggestions needed. I have exp and shit but its all useless in bumfuck Australia.

>WE have the gove allowing everyone in on 457 visas from overseas.

>We have 100+ applications on jobs on seek, linkedin etc.

>We have catch 22's on 3 years exp for entry level jobs, which are ((set up for employers to hire 457s))

>The only people who get high skileld grad work are people with mom dad or uncle steve in the company.

>There isnt affirmative action here. Only if your a female.

Did civil eng, fell for the mining in australia meme. Didnt get a job after 1 year. So took some profits off crypto and travelled around last year. Now I'm waiting to see if I get an offer from bumfuk nowhere soon.

If not I've signed up to at least do 1 semester of computer science but the plan is to do that learn programming, network and go overseas forever immediately after.
