Why not just do tariffs from the beginning?

So to start off, I am a liberal, but I am beginning to get redpilled, so please bear with my retardation on this.
I've been reading a lot on economics lately, and recently I've been caught up to speed on Trump doing tariffs on steel and aluminum, with the hopes of making those two things get produced in the US, thus increasing jobs and what not, thus making us richer (?).
So it makes us richer because we won't be spending money we would have on the imported steel and aluminum, right?
So my question is, why didn't we just do this to begin with? Why even bother importing at all?
I am not trying to suggest it won't work, I'm pretty sure it will, I'm just curious as to why we even import things at all if the end result is us just losing money.

International trade is generally a good thing for all involved, but their must be a proper balance. Past administrations have allowed our "allies" to levy tariffs and implement other restrictions that resulted in a steady flow of cash out of America and very little coming back in. Trump is using the threat of implementing tariff and restrictions to get our trade partners to drop their barriers and to balance the ledger. Free trade does not obligate the US to accept bad deals. They renegotiate or they face the consequences.

Ah I see. So the past administrations were dumb and just did highly imbalanced deals, creating deficits? But why? Was it incompetence, or something else?
And in regards to the trade war that CNN is saying might happen, is it actually a bad thing?
I mean, the US can't possibly produce anything that valuable can they? What the hell are they going to tariff? They don't buy much of anything from us do they? And the things they tariff, won't that just let us send that shit somewhere else in a more fair deal?
Is that how it works?

america doesnt have any real iron or aluminum deposits anymore. its been recycling them for its steel and aluminum industry and importing in as much as it can. thats for the raw or semi processed commodity like hot rolled plate

for parts well fuck who wants to pay for factories in america? hurts the bottom line. while many americans think all that is made in china half of them cant tell you 10 currency names without googling currencies. they dont know shit. factories are typically not a 1 stop shop for a product if its got any metal in it. nope. you got extruders which can only make specific things and hydrolic presses that stamp other things or cut with dies. these things are spread across the planet. america lacks most of the factories it would need to do durable goods or even automotive by itself without buying stiff from other countries

so what has been in place is other countries buy stuff and make a part or 2 or a car frame and america buys that to keep GM alive in america. ford has almost given up on america already.

since americas raw steel is just recycled i dont think it will last long. they have tried to put a brave face on the situation but by fall it would probably start to run out if we got zero from any one to recycle

What if we were to negotiate with some other country to import those things from them, in a more fair deal then? Is that what they're doing then?
>If you don't want to renegotiate with us, then you we just won't buy anything at all from you. We'll take our business somewhere else.

We did. The majority of taxes collected up until the 1900's were from tariffs. Neocon republicans and democrat politicians Literally took bribes from foreign countries and corporations to ship our manufacturing sector overseas. Look it up my man

We should import things like coffee and certain fruits, rare earth minerals ect... There is no reason at all to import things we can, and did make here

>So to start off, I am a liberal.

Womp womp.

Well shit.
So the Democrats and some corrupt Republicans just fucked over everyone in the country for their own gain?
The more and more I learn about this the more I want to take this fucking flag off.

"So the Democrats and some corrupt Republicans just fucked over everyone in the country for their own gain?"

This is a surprise to you?

I've always thought it was all just bullshit. Now that I'm actually reading and learning more about this shit I am starting to find out how wrong I am.
If only I could convince my god damned friends to take up the same interest in learning more about the things they are trying to advocate.
I literally tried giving my copy of Sowell's Basic Economics to my other friend who is a liberal, and he said
>Nah man, if it's a book about Science I'll dig, but Economics is just political shit.
Then I tried telling him Economics technically IS a Science, and it went in one ear and out the other.
He then smoked weed. I am serious.

Yes. This is what politicians in our "democracy" do. Did you ever wonder how Obama went into the presidency as a middle class community orginizer and came out with 3 mansions? These people have been selling us out for years

Oh and btw I'm still registered as a dem since I live in a blue state and actually want to be able to have some affect on their primaries.

Please never listen to anything the mainstream media says about economics. They ignore even the most basic economic principles in order to push their agenda. Listening to them will only make you misinformed. For example, if country A buys something from country B then sells it to country C at a net zero gain, country A would have a trade deficit with country B. But this is clearly not a bad thing, it's net neutral. Yet all the main stream talks about is trade deficits and trade surpluses without looking at the whole picture.

Until we had an income tax the vast majority of federal funds was provided by tariffs. So it has been tried before, for almost 150 years, but has changed since the 20th century.

As you get older you'll come to understand you can't save, or even educate most people. They just don't care and will not challenge their prexisting beliefs.

Don't stress about it, it's just part of the human experience. It's not good or bad, it just is.

Should we tell him about the holocaust?

I mean, back when we ran on the National, or American, school of economics system and were far more protectionist and economically nativist, we did have tariffs on foreign goods. The period during which we followed this economic system saw the growth of the US from a regional power to a world power that was threatening the fiscal might of Britain, but then in the early 19th century we began the turn toward a more British capitalist style system due to changes wrought by the Wilson administration and his successors. The German Empire employed a similar economic model and, well, we all know what happened to it in the early and mid 20th century.
Also, I used to be a liberal, too, a blue collar labor type Democrat, but then during the Clinton era, the neoliberal DLC and NeoMarxist progressives took over the party and have pretty much driven the white working class and the protectionists and economic nationalists over to the Republicans or out into Independent no-man's land.
If you've noticed, there has been an astounding shift among Republican and conservative voters that began sometime in the Obama era and finally expressed itself politically with Trump's election. A rejection of neoconservatism and neoliberalism, the death of Christian conservatism as the last of the churches get swallowed up and turned to the globalist agenda, the rise of a new, youthful nationalism, a rejection of foreign interventionism and resurgence of traditional American isolationist sentiments, these are the hallmarks of the right in this new political shift. The left becomes more neoliberal, more economically capitalist while giving lip service to socialist solutions, culturally consumerist, with a bizarre new moralism and downright neoconservative foreign policy.

>But why? Was it incompetence, or something else?
They were likely taking bribes to fuck our economy and make themselves rich(er). Seems to be how these things usually work.

americans want cheaper goods

american made goods are too expensive

china doesnt care what its people want so they can and will win this

>be me
>espouse the necessity and virtue of tariffs for almost a decade
>conservative family calls me retarded
>trump enacts tariffs
>”OMG BASED TAXED MAN, MAGA”

Fucking boomers, dude.

Well shit.
Where can I learn more about all this? I've finished Sowell's Basic Economics. Should I read The Wealth of Nations? I also have pic related?
I actually kind of want to read the Communist Manifesto now, just so I can find out how insane the ideas there are now that I actually have somewhat of an inkling of an understanding of what actually is going on.

Damn. That's depressing.

>Economics is just political shit
This is true though, for the most part. There are basic economic mechanisms which can be studied academically, but practically all the major schools of economic thought are just cults of personality and political tools.

>but then in the early 19th century
Sorry, I meant in the early 20th century.

Also short term benefit. Cheaper consumer goods at the expense of sending the supply chains and their infrastructure abroad to competing economies.

Not yet. He will get their in his own time.

The mind of the liberal is something I've never had a good grasp on, I understand their near religious mentality but its hard for me to understand that they DONT understand that most politicians would collude to screw people for their own benefit.

>implying priests rape children
Fuck off, heretic.

>making those two things get produced in the US, thus increasing jobs and what not, thus making us richer (?).
This doesn't work. Tariffs drive up the cost of a good, and make everyone poorer.

However, tariffs can be used to put economic pressure on competing nations, in the hopes that they will be worse off than you and agree to your political goals. It's a one-nation economic sanction. And secondly, they can incentivize the domestic production of a strategically important good. If your nation imports all of its food because it's cheaper than making it at home, what will happen if you go to war with the exporter? It takes time to start up agricultural and industrial production, and in that time you might be conquered. But in both of these cases, the economy as a whole does not benefit. The cost of those secondary benefits is reduced prosperity, so they have to be worth it before you start slapping tariffs on shit.

>but its hard for me to understand that they DONT understand that most politicians would collude to screw people for their own benefit.

They project their own personalities onto other people. It's the same reason why they think that Muslims in the west can be convinced to just discard the teachings of their religion.

I know this shit is hilarious. Trump is basically Buchanan lite, yet the neocons call these policies left wing.

An absolute insane world we live in

Honestly unless you want to become an actual economist, don't even approach it from a technical perspective. Macroeconomics is way too complex, you could spend a lifetime and not get anywhere.

All you need to know is what you want the economy to do for you. For me personally, that is to supply the population with labor opportunities, protect workers and make sure people's basic needs are met. Stop thinking in terms of "maximizing the economy" or whatever abstract jew BS the mainstream wants to feed you.

Don't become an economics ideologue, be willing to employ whatever economic strategy will best benefit your people, whether that's closing the border or instituting tariffs or whatever else. And when I say benefit, I mean it in a tangible way. Ask yourself if people can raise a family while working a normal 9-5 job where you live. Can they own a home? Those are the real metrics that matter. The economy should serve its people.

>Where can I learn more about all this?

Read the commie manifesto, mein kampf, then death of a superpower

That'll be a great foundation to get you started

>Macroeconomics is way too complex, you could spend a lifetime and not get anywhere.

I'm yet to see any evidence that anyone at all has managed to nail macroeconomics.

I still don't really buy into the whole National Socialist thing, or the "Jews are evil!" shtick that Jow Forums does a lot.
I know a few Jewish people, and they are ok. Jow Forums makes it seem like every person that is a Jew is some vampire.
I also find National Socialism kind of hypocritical, because Jow Forums says, and I agree with them on this:
>Blacks should not get special treatment because they're black!
But then I see this, which instantly loses me:
>Whites deserve special treatment since they're white!
Just comes across as hypocritical as fuck. How about nobody gets special treatment? Socialism and National Socialism, fuck them both. I don't really want to give my income to anyone. White or black. Whites can be just as fucking stupid and lazy as the most dumbest of blacks.
What is the difference between paying for a bum who is black and paying for a bum who is white? None to me. I don't want to pay for neither.
I can't even say
>If they were proven to be working but were just struggling financially than sure I would be glad to help
because how would I know the reason they are struggling financially with a job isn't because they're just spending their money like fucking retards?
If anyone can answer these questions I'll gladly change my mind, but for now this is what I think.

Read the commie manifesto, mein kampf, then suicide of a superpower

That'll be a great foundation to get you started

This presidential period was a wake-up call for a lot of people

"What even is a tariff? What year is this?"

Here's the thing. The baby boomers were smart. They knew how to run this shit. Liberals dumbed down the education in the name of progress, so now you're looking at those baby boomer ideas and going "why didnt we do this from the start???" , ask your teachers why they failed you

I think Ghost of True Capitalist Radio has helped me actually start questioning these things. It was only after he stopped taking calls and getting trolled that I started really listening to what he was saying and started thinking on all of this.

They are usually trading political favors.

We will give you your tariff on our corn if you stay the fuck out of our face about Iraq etc...

Then years later people can't figure what happened because no one had given a shot about Iraq for almost 20 years but those shitty little deals from back then are still around and have snowballed to the point of screwing our economy.

Short sighted stupidity basically, kind of like what some EU countries are doing now, sacrificing national Harmony for short term political gains AKA unrestricted immigration for photo ops and virtue points, they will pay for it when they hit critical Mass and it tears their countries apart... Again...

Just so we're clear here, you do know that Jews did 9/11, right?

Go fap to Ayn Rand somewhere else, faggot.

Attached: 1525494799260.jpg (1080x903, 89K)

Put the whole NAZI/Jew/WWII shit on the backburner for now. The subject will end up rearing its head once you start digging into history and economics

I think 9/11 definitely isn't as it seems. I don't know about Jews though, as I said here I do find it strange though how
>A lot of people in the higher up positions in government are of the same religion (Jewish), even if Judaism is a common religion. What are the chances?
>The guy who owned the Twin Towers or whatever just so happened to not be in that day, and just so happened to take out a massive insurance on them like a week before they were hit.
That shit is kinda fishy.

>I think Ghost of True Capitalist Radio has helped me actually start questioning these things. It was only after he stopped taking calls and getting trolled that I started really listening to what he was saying and started thinking on all of this.

I'm under the belief we're going through a phase where the milennials are starting to rediscover the realities of why things ran the way we did.

Someday we'll reimplement honor systems and act like it's the first time we ever did it. Someday.

Look up Enron, look at what they did during 9/11

Look up the pipeline.
It's not what you think at all.

>I know a few Jewish people, and they are ok.
Yeah, I'm sure there are many Jews who are great people, as individuals, but people aren't individuals, we're collectives, populations in competition for territory, resources, authority, etc. Jews act as a collective, both consciously and unconsciously, according to deeply culturally and behaviorally reinforced survival strategy that involves parasitism of a host nation and the displacement and disempowerment of that society's dominant population to ensure conditions most beneficial to its own survival and dominance.
You kinda have to stop think of people as humans and start thinking of them as predatory animals with complex social dynamics and a bunch of shiny junk.

>closet communist engaging in Jewish debate tactics
Shocker.

I guess I should start learning more about The Fed now. Anything I should know to start off?
So far from what I gather The Fed made the Great Depression like 3x longer and way worse than it would have been without The Fed. What else have they fucked up?

I'm a fascist, dipshit. Not everyone who thinks your ideology is retarded is muh commie. I do believe in recreational nukes and child soldier armies though, so I guess you guys are good for something.

Attached: 1528326933726.png (793x794, 602K)

Because US are better at other things than steel etc, buy steel from china, build trucks or whatever and sell them to china, all kinds of tariffs are retarded...
If producing steel is profitable someone would do it, but it aint. But with tariffs it will be profitable because the prices go up and why pay for chinese pig steel when u could get grade A for same price

What the Hell is happening?
freedomworks.org/content/debunking-myths-great-depression
Why do we have an entity which has all this power and control over our money? What the fuck? The Federal Reserve didn't just prolong the depression, they caused it too? What? Why is this even a thing?

>letting China supply your military with subpar shitty steel

Surely not a national security risk at all

You should know that some of its biggest opponents died on the Titanic.

Alright, I see you've heard the Alex Jones talking points. So first of all we need to be clear on a few things. There are two kinds of 9/11 truthers. You have the Alex Jones kind who believe that there weren't even any planes, they were all missiles, or holograms, or aliens, or something... These guys are very effective in masking the truth from the general population, because when people who aren't into 9/11 hear about 9/11 conspiracies, they immediately think "oh like holograms? yeah that's retarded". But there's a separate movement of people who are trying to find out what actually happened, based purely on what physical evidence can be found. Anyway, the "Jews were told to stay home" is an Alex Jones theory.

I don't expect you to take my word at face value, because I'm just some guy on an internet forum. I'm also not an expert so I might get some of the details wrong... Actually you know what, I'll just link you to an authoritative source. If you want to have your fucking mind blown, try to watch this with an open mind. There's some very clear evidence for Israeli intelligence agencies having advance knowledge of 9/11, and even helping orchestrate it. youtube.com/watch?v=wQKkfq-U4v4

Here's what most likely happened:
Jews planted bombs in the towers to make sure they went down. They trained and covered for the hijackers, orchestrating the attack. They intended to hit building 7 with flight 93, but failed. The bombs still went off though, razing the building. There was another attack planned on the George Washington bridge. This attack was used as a pretense for the "war on terror" and subsequent invasion of Iraq which benefits Israel massively.

That sounds kind of compelling actually. I'll have to watch that video soon.
Speaking of Israel, how can I learn more about Foreign Affairs? I don't know jackshit about the Middle East aside from it's where Muslims come from and it's a giant dangerous dump.

Bombs seem unlikely given the additional effort required to make it happen while not getting caught. It's completely feasible that some other parties were involved though.

>I'm a fascist
>provides no actual fascist counterarguments to my post
Is this what passes as supporting fascism these days?

I'm just busting your balls, kid, geez.

All you need to know is that geopolitics is centered around Israel. Israel uses state money to buy itself political power (which is illegal for every other state to do, but AIPAC (the Jewish lobby) doesn't have to register as a foreign lobby because of some BS talmudic reason). Every war the US has fought has been to secure Israel's position in the middle east. That's why there's a war in Syria right now. That's why we invaded Iraq.

The elevators just happened to be out of order for the 6 months prior to 9/11 so that totally innocent maintenance companies connected to Israeli intelligence could perform nightly maintenance. Building 7 was just tired of standing up all the time so it just happened to fall exactly when the other two towers did. There just happened to be another plane hijacking at the same time, there's no way that plane could have been meant for building 7. A van with explosives just so happened to be heading towards the George Washington bridge the same day. A van that we heard of ONCE in the media and then never again (presumably because the Jewish media got the order to stop talking about it).

I get what you're saying, it seems pretty far fetched but I think it's the most likely theory.

>The elevators just happened to be out of order for the 6 months prior to 9/11 so that totally innocent maintenance companies connected to Israeli intelligence could perform nightly maintenance.

That doesn't necessarily mean bombs. They could have been finding or adding weak points in the building, given that it seems that the hijackers knew to target the towers at specific points.

Why wouldn't you just use explosives if you already had access to the building, and had access to explosives (the vans). Explosives fits with how building 7 came down as well. There are also hundreds of eye witness accounts of several explosions (before and/or after the planes hit).

Explosives need to be brought in and installed quickly by people who know what they're doing. They also need to be hidden. And it would also take a fuckload of them on a building of that size.

If the towers needed to come down and a regular plane full of fuel couldn't do it, it would be much easier to put the explosives on the plane.

Fucking commie shill
Very subtle unironically

That's the way it was before 1994. Then Free Trade killed all domestic production and the economy went to shit in only a few years. It doesn't matter how cheap bullshit is at Walmart if you don't have a paying job to afford it.

If you want to see how much lobbying goes on you can navigate this site and see how much money was donated and to who.
opensecrets.org/influence/

Liberals bash the NRA for lobbying against gun control but don't care that Comcast donated half a million dollars to Hillary in the election.
>Don't hate the player, hate the game

>9/11 truther
Why can't a multi-ton jetliner traveling at 400mph knock down a skyscraper? Why do all the effort when you can actually fly a jumbo jet into it halfway down where partial weakening will guarantee a failure due to the load of many stories above?

Who hasn't built a house of cards that does really well until one point of failure propogates?

I never said there weren't any planes. Obviously Arabs ran planes into the building. The questions are how and who planned it, and to what end.

If you look at who won big on this, it was the Israelis. I don't think a bunch of sand niggers could have coordinated the attack, and there are many reasons to believe that Israel had its fingers all over the planning.

The Saudis and Israelies are allies and the hijackers were Saudis, so what does it fucking matter if it was Mossad proper or six degrees of Kevin Bacon? 9/11/2001 was a distraction to turn American focus outward so people would stop noticing that NAFTA was causing huge numbers of jobs to be lost in almost ever city and town. Can't worry about if Free Trade is hurting or harming Americans, we gotta get those goatfuckers in Afganistan and debate if Sadamn needs some regime change.

Checked, Heiled and agreed.

Well there are plenty of reasons to care. Sure the Saudis and Israelis are in kahoots, but they are both supposed to be US allies and they both get untold amounts of money from you. I'm not sure how much was lost on NAFTA, but what I am sure of is that what was spent killing irrelevant sand niggers wasn't chump change either. I'm also a softie, so I don't approve of killing people for no reason, but I get if that's not a high priority of yours here. The main point is that cutting ties with Israel (and all these fucking betrayals are good reasons to do so) would massively benefit both the US and the world in general. That's why the betrayals are important to expose to the public.

1. tariffs are retarded and make us poorer. for example, would imposing tariffs on imported crude oil make any sense? of course not!
2. trump will cancel these tariffs very soon once he realizes the damage they cause.

china needed us and we needed china.. Richard Nixon came along with his most favored nation BS and years later this is what we got.
communist china will collapse with a 25% unemployment. we know this then and we know it now, china has now reached the economic level of our plan. they will not be allowed to grow into a threat. trump is smart they know that we must do this trade war across the board to work.
