Few reasons, people are getting old and retiring and we need more people to tax to pay for their social programs. The economy gains spending power whenever someone takes a loan but people today are already saturated with debt, so when you bring in new people with 0 debt they seem rich by comparison. In general you need more people to spend money to keep cash circulating in the economy.

My theory after thinking for a while, is the main culprit is birth control, which I'd consider a huge subsection of feminism. Not the only factor at all, but it's the largest.
