communism is based around the idea of revolutions by the proletariat to overthrow the landowners and rich people, take their money, redistribute it, and start over. then they mix in some socialism, and typically top it off with a heavy-handed dose of authoritarian dictatorship.

socialism may be part of the communist ideology, in theory, but socialism isn't an ideology. people who support medicare for all and free college have absolutely nothing to do with the idea of revolutions and giving land back to the farmers. the jump between the economic/political idea of socialism and the _ideology_ of communism is a huge jump and not some sort of smooth transition like you say.

because they're from a formerly communist country and communist="old fashioned" to them? or because they're hypocrites trying to build a revolutionary army by entering the political system they oppose just to gain publicity? or maybe they simply just call themselves communist but aren't really communists for whatever silly reason...

give me an example of where this is going on, in a relevant way. like somebody who legitimately is getting votes in any western democracy (discarding those who were previously communist, since there it means "tradition" rather than "revolution") at a few percent level in any major election?

there is also this phenomenon of "communes" and so the word "communism" can take on a different meaning. like at "communes" in the US, they have a "managed economy" where everybody works together without worrying about money, but on the scale of a few dozen people. that's a thing. but it's not relevant to politics on a national or global scale.

Well if the country gets too socialist then some southern states will breakaway without a doubt, and if you knew anything about American leftists you’d know what they couldn’t give less of a fuck if a conservative area left the country.
