But the beginning of collectivism can be dated at least back to the New Deal and using the government to "stimulate" and fix problems in the economy. Already in the 1930s there were Communists (wobblies) showing up. Neither political party was going to accept them. Then after World War II there continued to be a disgruntled group of people who got involved in the arts in the 1950s. These were the "folkies" and as I read in a book about Bob Dylan, these people were writing protest songs BEFORE the Vietnam War. And here we find the main idea behind Progressivism - protesting. Anyway, the Vietnam War accelerated the Collectivist protest movement. Still as late as 1968, neither party wanted to own the rabble rousers who burned the American flag. But by the 1972 election the Democrat party had aligned itself with all of the disgruntled people in America - the feminists, the increasingly Socialist union workers, the gays, the college students. These people started fully taking over the Democrat Party although many Democrats did not realize their party had been hijacked.
