it's honestly a pretty arresting story but I doubt zemeckis can make it into anything more than a guy overcoming adversity and combating his demons through the help of dolls

There is already a very good documentary on this. It's in the same vein as Crumb, taking a very personal look at an outside artist. In that documentary, Hogancamp wasn't shown as some loveable man bringing joy to others, he was shown as a deeply troubled paranoid loner trying to express his numerous psycho-sexual problems and genuinely traumatic assault in the form of outsider art. It didn't suggest at any point that "This was a normal guy, he got beat up, now he's an artist bringing art to the public". It makes it clear that was an already troubled person dabbling in frankly weird social behaiours who, without the popularity of his art, would be one of those weirdos castigated by the same media who are now making a biopic about it.

Also, Hogancamp is a pretty "safe" outsider artist who it's easy to portray as a "kooky" guy brutalized by society and who finds love and accepetance. You will never, EVER, get films about other outsider artists who are genuinely much more interesting, such as Henry Darger or James Hampton.

Deep down, I'm still a softy (I think most of Jow Forums actually is), so I wish that just ONCE, one of these stories was for real--like a truly sympathetic person, with no fucked up stuff that compromise the purity of the story, who gets wrongly targeted by unambiguously bad people, and some heartwarming story ensues, and the media actually covers it. But sanitized fictional-"realism" for propaganda and narrative reenforcement disgusts me, and only makes me more cynical.

Nazis are the modern version of demons. Pure evil, responsible for everything, tempt people to sin (being racist and bigoted) and too numerous to count.
