Southern italians are a distinctly different ethnic group tho, in terms of both complexion and achievements.
Whereas american whites are essentially the same anywhere you go in America(German, and Anglo for the most part, with some italians in Major cities) due to rapid colonization, therefore you can realistically call them the same ethnic group.
