Vietnam was under French colonial rule when communism began to take over, to the US came to help out the French but then the French bailed out like pussies and left us to try and finish an unpopular war in foreign territory, loosing hoards of US draftees fighting over random hills in Vietnam that they quickly abandoned after conquering it, allowing the Viet Cong to retake it without contest.
Eventually the public pressure was to great and we went home without accomplishing anything except feed the military industrial complex for about a decade, and Vietnam is communist to this day.
