You do get leave during long deployments. Had a buddy that knocked his wife up with their sixth kid during his mid tour leave. She popped out the baby 3 days after we got back from an 18 month deployment to Iraq.

The Army sometimes lets you take leave halfway into a yearlong deployment. Given that most soldiers make a mission to cram in a year's worth of sex in two weeks, it's not out of the question for a wife to get knocked up and be into the third trimester when the soldier gets back 6 months later.

If I could do it all again I would go to the Navy recruiter instead of Army and held out at Meps for a good job. Would have loved to be a Nuke power operator with a nice high paid union job in the civilian sector after my term of service. Instead I became a medic. My only qualifications that would transfer over are basic EMT (ambulance driver) which I have absolutely no desire to do.

I became a scientist and helped work on the F-35. Soldiers are just pawns, it's the lowest form of duty to one's nation. Service should guarantee citizenship but it is far from the only path, and it is not the best path.
