Spencer is not the leader of the alt-right. No matter where the word came from, it is now a euphemism for "white nationalist" and the alt-right does exist. Then some people turned up at Charlottesville to protest the statue removal and a guy turned up with a Nazi flag. A lot of it is divide and conquer, following Alinsky's rules about targeting and polarizing individuals. Some of it is genuine paranoia which is definitely common on the fringe-right.

And a ton of it, especially from American flags, are non-white and mixed race people who like Trump and have right-wing tendencies, but are uncomfortable with the idea of whote people asserting their right to have their own nations again.

Gottfried used the term alternative right in a broad and general sense- literally describing all conservatives that weren't pro-Bush. He didn't use it any way resembling the ethnonationalist "alt-right" sense.

The thing destorying the west is mass immigrstion of non-whites and universalist progressivism. What alt-right has described is a trend opposing those things.

I actually don't love the term for a number of reasons- the Jewish origin, while tangental, is less than ideal; and since the goal is to become mainstream, delclaring yourself alternative seems self-defeating after a certain point.

But believe this- there will be a name. People name things, irs what they do. The phenoemon is too clear and obvious, and ubiquitous across so many white countries now, to think that no one is going to notice it and use certain terms to reference it.

You can deny that an ethnocentric, reactionary surge is happening- no one, right or left or nothing, is going to believe you. So one way or another its going to have a name, whether its alt-right or something else.
