The best examples of this strategy were Chanology and Operation Payback. By 2012 Anonymous was already a vague label more than a coherent group, but Sabu's betrayal was really the nail in the coffin. After it turned out that he was a snitch, the entire core hacker pool of Anonymous pretty much evaporated, either because they realized the feds were onto them (AVunit) or because Sabu sold them directly to the partyvan (every other member of Lulzsec).

What was left after this happened was the old periphery of Anonymous, which during the Occupy years had already become infiltrated by old-school activist who had never heard of Jow Forums or hacking. Without the hacker core, there was no way for Anonymous to cause lulz, and thus the remaining "members" still interested in lulz left the organization. Right now Anonymous is just a brand, used by marketers to sell T-shirts to gullible teens and by the feds to lure skiddies to their honeypots.
